Graece Μάρτυρ. Sic dicti sunt Praecones Euangelii Apostoli, i. e., Testes, Actor. c. 1. v. 8. 12. et c. 22. v. 15. In ipecie vero, qui ob Christi confessionem interfecti sunt: quô sensu Stephanus Actor. c. 22. v. 20. et Antipas Apocalyps. c. 2. v. 13. Martyres Christi appellantur. Vide quoque Apocaly pl. c. 6. v. 9. c. 12. v. 11. et c. 17. v. 6. Atque haecnotio in Ecclesia obtinuit. Dicuntur autem Martyres in illa, non solum, qui propter Christum aut iustitiam occiduntur, ut pueri Bethleemitici et Abel, apud Cyprianum Ep. 56. Sed et, qui ob nomen Christi in carcere moriuntur, vel in fuga aut in solitudinea latronibus, aut a bestiis interimuntur, vel prae rerum necessariarum inopiâ exstinguuntur, vel quâcun que correpti aegritudine intereunt, apud eund. Ep. 37. Imo et, qui propter Christum ea subierunt supplicia, per quae mori eos necesse erat, nisi divinô miraculô conservati tuissent, apud Athanasium Synops. S. Script. Etiam hôc vocabulô honorabantur olim Confessores illi, qui tormenta propter Christum perpessi, mori parati etant, etsi postea superstites manerent, apud Cyprianum Ep. 9. et in Concil. Carthaginensi, ubi quidam Martyres adfuerunt et suffragia dixerunt, Cyprianô praeside. Nec a Martyrii splendore visa est distare mors illorum, qui morbô pestiserô per Aegyptum grassante, dum aegrotis, propter Christi amorem, intrepide ministrabant, ipsi contage infecti mortem oppetierunt, laetantes de exitu tam beato, apud Eusebium l. 7. c. 22.
